On August 10, the NCCU College of Informatics hosted a lecture by Academia Sinica Academician C.-C. Jay Kuo, currently Distinguished Professor and Ming Hsieh Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California. Professor Kuo delivered a talk titled “Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, and Green Learning,” tracing the evolution of AI and introducing his innovative concept of Green Learning. The event drew nearly one hundred participants to the quiet summer campus and sparked lively discussions and strong interest in the topic.

Professor Kuo noted that since 2012, advances in deep learning have rapidly propelled AI development, leading to major breakthroughs in applications such as image recognition and language generation. However, current systems rely heavily on large volumes of labeled data and high-power computation, which not only consume tremendous energy but also suffer from limited interpretability and reliability. To address these challenges, he proposed Green Learning as a more sustainable solution—advocating modular architectures, nonparametric modeling, and feedforward training to build AI systems that are more energy-efficient, transparent, and capable of logical reasoning. He further showcased concrete applications such as PixelHop and DefakeHop, demonstrating their strong performance in image classification and quality assessment.

Before the lecture, Dean Chi-Hsuan Liu of the College of Informatics, together with several faculty members, engaged in discussions with Professor Kuo on international AI trends and potential collaborations. Participants included Vice Dean and Director of the Cybersecurity Master’s Program Jui-Lin Tso, Director of the Office of International Cooperation Yi-Ning Chen, University Librarian Wen-Hung Liao, Chair of the Department of Computer Science Tung-Wei Kuo, Professor Shih-Sheng Sun, Director of the AI Program Chia-Ming Chang, and Director of the Digital Content Program Yi-Hsiu Chen. The meeting also outlined preliminary plans for cooperation in areas such as student exchange, joint research, and co-teaching, with a focus on artificial intelligence, visual computing, and sustainable technologies—demonstrating the College’s strong commitment to expanding international partnerships.

The NCCU College of Informatics has a strong advantage in interdisciplinary integration, bringing together expertise in information science, linguistics, communication, and the social sciences to advance the practical application of AI across academic and professional domains. The College continues to demonstrate innovation and a global outlook. Although brief, Professor C.-C. Jay Kuo’s visit offered valuable academic inspiration to faculty and students and opened new opportunities for future collaboration between NCCU and USC.
