Sustainability Vision

NCCU is committed to becoming a model sustainable campus, nurturing harmony between humanity and nature

In 2023, NCCU published its first Sustainability Report, using the process to review campus data, reflect on governance, build shared sustainability awareness, and identify future actions.

As a humanities- and social sciences–focused university, NCCU advances sustainability through teaching, research, good governance, and social engagement, encouraging lifelong learning, ecological awareness, systems thinking, and the sharing of sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, NCCU will pursue the following ten ESG priorities

  • Track carbon footprints, shorten carbon pathways, and move toward carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Leverage academic resources to deepen understanding of global ecological interconnections and urgent environmental challenges, balancing ecological health, social justice, and economic fairness.
  • Enhance environmental literacy and ethics, encourage sustainability research, and promote open access to research outcomes.
  • Build an EDI campus that upholds equality, diversity, and inclusion, fostering empathy, trust, and mutual support.
  • Engage faculty and students in community partnerships to address sustainability challenges through shared learning and local solutions.
  • Promote regional equity, intergenerational justice, and environmental responsibility to safeguard future generations.
  • Reflect on organizational practices and continuously improve sustainability strategies and evaluation tools.
  • Leverage organizational, social, and technological innovation to strengthen sustainability actions.
  • Work with partner universities and stakeholders across sectors to jointly advance sustainable development.
  • Support interdisciplinary research and teaching, integrate sustainability perspectives across fields, and cultivate sustainability talent.

Short-, Mid-, and Long-Term Sustainability Goals

A sustainable campus is built through steady, cumulative efforts and meaningful transformation. It requires both concrete short-term actions and a long-term strategic vision—guided by values and realized through action.

On September 6, 2024, the University Council approved the NCCU Centennial Strategic Foresight Report 2024–20284, which outlines the University’s mid- to long-term development goals and strategies for the period from 2024 to 2028.

Chapter 10, “Sustainable Campus,” examines sustainability challenges and solutions across EnvironmentSociety, and Governance, spanning operations, education, and research.

NCCU’s short-, mid-, and long-term sustainability goals include the following:

To lay the foundation for sustainability actions and create an enabling environment, the University’s short-term priorities include:

  1. Establish dedicated sustainability structures: Form task teams to connect internal and external expertise and coordinate campus-wide sustainability initiatives.5
  2. Develop sustainability indicators and baseline data: Build NCCU-specific indicators aligned with international standards, and disclose sustainability data through an online platform to enhance transparency and participation.
  3. Launch campus sustainability action plans: Identify material sustainability issues through stakeholder engagement and develop corresponding action initiatives.6

To integrate resources, share knowledge, and exchange experience for greater sustainability impact, NCCU will actively build partnerships with like-minded domestic and international universities, civic organizations, and enterprises. Mid-term goals include:

  1. Expanding domestic sustainability alliance partnerships
  2. Increasing participation in international sustainability collaboration networks
  1. Environment: Achieve campus carbon neutrality and create an environmentally friendly, people-centered, and poetic campus.
  2. Society: Become a leading model for EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) in higher education.
  3. Governance: Build a university governance system that supports lifelong learning, employee well-being, and sustainable development, while cultivating sustainability-literate talent to advance environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
